Dr. Ian Francis

Dr. Malcolm Johnston


Malcolm has been a consultant interventional radiologist at Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals and Western Sussex Hospitals since 2005. He has been the lead Interventional Radiologist since 2011.

Malcolm completed his medical training and specialist radiology training at The Royal Free Hospital in London. Shortly before starting in Brighton, he completed a one year Interventional Radiology Fellowship in Vancouver, Canada.

Malcolm has a specialist interest in Vascular, Hepatobiliary and Renal imaging and associated minimally invasive procedures. He has extensive experience in the procedures of Angioplasty and Stenting, Fibroid Embolisation, and Pelvic Vein/Varicocoele and Tumour Embolization. He also runs an oncology venous access service for the placement of chemotherapy lines.

Malcolm is an Honorary Senior lecturer at Brighton and Sussex Medical school with a keen interest in undergraduate education, and he also chairs the Education Committee of the British Society of Interventional Radiology


Dr. Jonathan Richenberg


Jonathan Richenberg [ MA Biochem (Cantab), BM Bch (Oxon), MRCP (London), FRCR (London), Hon. Sen Lect (BSMS)] qualified in 1990 from Oxford and became a radiology consultant in 1999 at Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals Trust, appointed to lead the urogenital imaging service. After becoming an honorary senior lecturer in 2003 at the newly established Brighton & Sussex medical school, he went on to co-found the Sussex Cancer Network for Urological cancers.
Jonathan was a proud founding member of British Society of Uroradiology (BSUR) and has always worked to promote the society within UK and further afield through his association with European Society of Uroradiology (inaugural chair of scrotal and penile imaging working group and current chair of the prostate cancer working group).
Between 2017-2020, he has been chief of the central clinical service division at his teaching hospital trust, responsible for (among other things) imaging, pathology and cancer services.
Jonathan is enjoying returning to follow his academic pursuits, to promote mpMRI first pathways for suspected prostate cancer, continue with new imaging for renal and scrotal masses and help develop the recently accredited endometriosis service in Sussex. He hopes to resume (when possible) lecturing in Europe and beyond.
Attachments to NICE and through connections with the Royal College of Radiologists, Jonathan brings experience and enthusiasm to the role of Research and Guidelines Officer at BSUR.
Jonathan’s specialist interests are urological, nephrological (renal) and gynaecological and infertility imaging.


Dr. Emma Simpson


Dr Emma Simpson obtained her Bachelor of Science degree from University of London in 1991 and qualified in medicine from Charing Cross and Westminster Medical School in 1994 with distinction.

She completed her specialist radiology training in 2006 from St Georges Hospital training scheme. In this time she obtained specialist training at the Institute of Urology at University College Hospital.

She has an interest in Uroradiology and skin cancer and has specialist skills in using ultrasound microbubbles, multiparametric prostate MRI scans and targeted biopsies of the prostate gland.

She is a member of the Sussex wide specialist Urology Cancer and Skin cancer Multidisciplinary meetings.

She is married with 3 young children.


Dr. Phil Thompson


Dr. Phil Thompson obtained an MA from the University of Cambridge in 1992 and qualified in medicine from Barts and the London Medical School with distinction in 1996.

He trained in radiology at University College London Hospitals and was awarded the Frank Doyle medal in the FRCR exam.

He has interests in urological, gastrointestinal and interventional radiology and has specialist skills in multiparametric prostate MRI, bowel CT/MRI and a wide range of interventional techniques.

He also has a major interest in education and training and is Head of the Kent, Surrey and Sussex School of Radiology.

He is married with two daughters.

Dr. Thompson practises at BSUH NHS Trust, Brighton and Haywards Heath Nuffield Hospitals and The Montefiore Hospital in Hove.


Dr. Gareth Lewis


Upper and Lower gastrointestinal imaging, including Virtual Colonoscopy. Hepatobiliary and pancreatic imaging. General diagnostics. Image guided drainage and biopsy. Non-vascular interventional radiology, with extensive experience in gastrointestinal stenting. Endoscopic ultrasound and endoscopically assisted GI intervention.

Gareth Lewis qualified from Imperial College School of Medicine in 2002. Prior to radiology training, his clinical background was in surgery, completing basic surgical training across most surgical specialties and a year of higher surgical training in colorectal surgery. He was admitted as a Member of the Royal College of Surgeons in 2006.
Dr Lewis trained as a Radiologist in Sussex and underwent subspecialty training in gastrointestinal imaging, interventional radiology, endoscopy and endoscopic ultrasound at the Royal Free Hospital, London and Addenbrookes Hospital, Cambridge.
He was appointed as a Consultant Diagnostic and Interventional Radiologist in Brighton in 2013.
Since his consultant appointment he has held a number of positions including Clinical Lead for Radiology, Lead Gastrointestinal Radiologist and Radiology Lead for the Sussex Bowel Cancer Screening Programme.

Dr Lewis is a subspecialised Gastrointestinal Diagnostic and Interventional radiologist, undertaking all forms of contrast study and cross sectional imaging pertaining to the gastrointestinal tract, liver and pancreatic systems, with a dedicated interest in oncology.
He has very extensive experience of CT colonography / Virtual Colonoscopy, and is a recognised Bowel Cancer Screening Programme Radiologist. He leads the Endoscopic Ultrasound cancer staging service at University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation trust, a regional tertiary referral centre for Oesophagogastric Cancer Surgery, and has a busy oncology interventional practice.


Dr Faye Cuthbert

Faye is a radiology consultant at University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust.She graduated with distinction in clinical sciences from Kings College London before undergoing training as a hospital medic in Kent and London prior to specialising in Radiology in 2010.

As well as offering expertise in all aspects of general ‘body’ imaging leading to specific diagnosis, Faye has specialist knowledge in gynaecological, renal and urological imaging with particular interest and expertise in abdominal and pelvic ultrasound, CT and MRI.

Dr. Marius Poitelea


A Consultant Neuroradiologist (Diagnostic and Interventional) since 2013, Dr Marius Poitelea practices at Hurstwood Park Neurological Centre, part of the Brighton and Sussex Universities NHS Trust.

Marius carried out his Neuroradiology training at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery in Queen Square, London and Kings College Hospital 2011-2013.


Dr. Amanda Jewison


Dr Amanda Jewison qualified in medicine from Brighton and Sussex Medical School in 2009 and completed specialist radiology training in 2020 in Sussex.
She was appointed as a consultant at both Worthing Hospital and Queen Victoria Hospital in East Grinstead in 2020. Her subspecialties are chest and head and neck radiology, undertaking specialist neck ultrasound and biopsies as well as cross-sectional imaging.
Amanda is a core member of Worthing lung cancer multidisciplinary team and the Sussex regional head and neck and thyroid cancer multidisciplinary teams. She also reports PET-CT for University Hospitals Sussex.
She is married with two young daughters.


Mr Simon C Harvey


Simon is a Consultant and registered specialist in Dental and Maxillofacial Radiology. He shares his NHS consultant post between Queen Victoria Hospital, Sussex and University College Hospital London. His subspecialty interests include dentoalveolar CBCT and salivary gland interventional radiology.


Dr. Joon Lee

BA (Oxon.). MS BS (Lond.). MRCS (Edin.). PhD (Imperial). FRCR.

Dr. Lee trained in Oxford, London, and then Brighton leading to an appointment as a specialist consultant cardiac radiologist. Before his radiology training, he completed a PhD under the supervision of Professor Sir Magdi Yacoub and Dr. Cesare Terracciano at the Harefield Heart Science Centre. He currently works in the Radiology Department of the University Hospitals Sussex NHS Trust, where he is the Clinical Lead in Cardiac Imaging and CT.
Dr. Lee has professional accreditation in assessing cardiovascular diseases using CT and MRI. He holds British Society of Cardiovascular Imaging (BSCI) accreditation for Cardiac CT as well as international accreditation by the Society for Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance (SCMR).
