Aortic Aneurysm Screening
Aortic aneurysms are caused by localized widening and weakening of the body's main artery. Aneurysms tend to grow over time and may ultimately rupture, causing massive bleeding and often death. It is possible to screen for aortic aneurysms by means of a simple, quick ultrasound scan.
Frequently Asked Questions - Aortic Aneurysm Screening
How are aortic aneurysms detected? An aneurysm may be felt as a pulsatile mass by a doctor on abdominal examination although many are difficult to feel. Aortic aneurysms are occasionally visible on abdominal X-rays, but nearly all are very easily detected by ultrasound. Ultrasound is highly accurate in measuring the size of the aneurysm, and follow-up ultrasound of detected aneurysms can accurately assess growth. Ultrasound is an accurate, safe and painless screening test for abdominal aortic aneurysms.
What is the benefit of screening for aortic aneurysms? Once detected, aortic aneurysms can be treated either surgically or using a less invasive technique known as endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR), which is performed jointly by vascular surgeons and interventional radiologists. Successful treatment will virtually eliminate the risk of rupture. If detected early, the aneurysm can be treated before it reaches a dangerous size. |
